What is a Puzzles Almanac certificate?
A record that specific files existed on a specific date under a named rights holder. Each file’s SHA-256 fingerprint is recorded, and the record is timestamped into the Bitcoin blockchain through OpenTimestamps.
Do I have to trust Puzzles Almanac?
No. The timestamp is anchored in the Bitcoin blockchain, and the downloadable .ots proof can be checked at opentimestamps.org or with the OpenTimestamps command-line client. It would still verify if this website no longer existed.
Why can I not download the files themselves?
Verification is hash-only, so unpublished manuscripts are never exposed. Ask the rights holder for the original files, hash them yourself, and compare the digests against the certificate.
Does a certificate prove who created the work?
No. A timestamp proves when a file existed, not who authored it, and it is not a government copyright registration. It is evidence that supports an ownership claim, not a determination of one.
